Is it permissible to cook fish and other forms of seafood while they are alive?

All praise is for Allah and there is no tawfiq or good except by Him. There is a difference of opinion amongst the Shafi'i scholars regarding cooking fish or seafood while they are alive. Some take the position that it is impermissible, while others take the position that it is permissible, but disliked (makruh). The position that it is disliked is the strongest position of the madhhab. Allah knows best what is correct.
